Georgia Funeral Cost Guide

A traditional burial in Georgia typically costs between $7,000 and $12,000, while direct cremation can be as low as $1,000 to $3,000. The total depends on which services and merchandise you choose, and both federal and Georgia law give you the right to pick and pay for only what you want.

These numbers can feel overwhelming when you are making decisions quickly. This guide breaks down each cost component so you know where the money goes and how to compare prices.

Cost Overview by Type

Arrangement TypeTypical Georgia RangeWhat Is Included
Traditional burial with service$7,000 - $12,000Funeral home services, embalming, viewing, ceremony, hearse, casket, burial plot, marker
Cremation with memorial service$3,000 - $7,000Funeral home services, cremation fee, urn, memorial ceremony, possible viewing
Direct cremation$1,000 - $3,000Cremation fee, basic services fee, alternative container, return of remains
Direct burial$2,000 - $5,000Basic services fee, burial plot, grave opening/closing, simple container

These ranges reflect pricing across Georgia metro and rural areas. Atlanta, Savannah, and Augusta tend to fall in the mid-to-upper range. Smaller towns and rural areas are often at the lower end.

Component Breakdown

Funeral Home Services

Every funeral home charges a non-declinable basic services fee. This covers the funeral director's time, staff, and overhead for coordinating the arrangements. In Georgia, this fee typically ranges from $1,500 to $3,000.

Additional service fees that may apply:

ServiceTypical Range
Basic services fee (non-declinable)$1,500 - $3,000
Embalming$500 - $1,000
Other body preparation (washing, dressing)$200 - $400
Viewing/visitation use of facility$300 - $600
Funeral ceremony use of facility$300 - $700
Transfer of remains to funeral home$200 - $500
Hearse$200 - $400
Service car/flower van$100 - $300

Casket

The casket is typically the single most expensive item in a traditional burial. Georgia funeral homes must show you a casket price list before you view any caskets (FTC Funeral Rule requirement).

TypeTypical Range
Basic cloth-covered wood casket$1,000 - $2,000
Mid-range metal casket$2,500 - $5,000
Premium hardwood or stainless steel$5,000 - $10,000+
Alternative container (for cremation)$50 - $200

Your right: Georgia funeral homes cannot refuse to handle a casket you purchased from a third party (such as an online retailer), and they cannot charge a handling fee for doing so. This is a federal right under the FTC Funeral Rule.

Cemetery Costs

Cemetery costs are separate from funeral home costs. They include:

ItemTypical Range
Burial plot (single grave)$1,000 - $4,000
Opening and closing the grave$500 - $1,500
Grave liner or vault$500 - $2,000
Headstone or grave marker$500 - $3,000+

Georgia has no state law requiring a casket or a vault for burial. However, most cemeteries require a vault or grave liner for ground maintenance purposes. Ask the cemetery directly about their requirements.

Cremation Costs

ItemTypical Range
Cremation fee$200 - $500
Urn$50 - $1,000+
Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis)$1,000 - $3,200 more than traditional cremation
Niche (for urn placement at cemetery)$500 - $2,000

Georgia legalized aquamation in 2012 by amending the definition of "cremation" to include chemical processes, and further clarified in 2021 by adding alkaline hydrolysis to the definition of "cremation device" (O.C.G.A. Section 43-18-1). Only a small number of facilities in Georgia currently offer aquamation services.

Georgia also legalized natural organic reduction (human composting) effective July 1, 2025 (Senate Bill 241), making it the 13th state to permit this option.

Your Pricing Rights

FTC Funeral Rule

The Federal Trade Commission Funeral Rule applies to every funeral home in Georgia. It provides critical consumer protections:

  • General Price List (GPL): Every funeral home must provide an itemized price list at the start of any in-person discussion. You are entitled to keep it.
  • Casket Price List: Must be provided before you view any caskets.
  • Outer Burial Container Price List: Must be provided before you view vaults or liners.
  • Phone prices: Funeral homes must provide price information over the phone to any caller who asks.
  • Choose only what you want: You have the right to purchase only the goods and services you want (with limited exceptions for the basic services fee).
  • No required embalming: Funeral homes cannot claim embalming is legally required. Georgia has no law requiring embalming.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Funeral home refuses to provide a General Price List
  • Claims that embalming is "required by law" (it is not in Georgia)
  • Claims that a casket is "required by law" for burial (it is not in Georgia)
  • Pressure to purchase packages without showing itemized pricing
  • Refusal to handle a casket purchased elsewhere

If you experience any of these, file a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or the Georgia Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at consumer.georgia.gov.

Pre-Need Contracts in Georgia

Pre-need contracts let you arrange and often prepay for funeral services before death. Georgia regulates these contracts through the Cemetery and Funeral Services Act of 2000 (O.C.G.A. Section 10-14-1 et seq.), administered by the Georgia Secretary of State.

Trust Fund Requirements (O.C.G.A. Section 10-14-7 and 10-14-7.1)

ItemMinimum Trust Deposit
Monuments and outer burial containers35% of sales price (minimum 120% of wholesale)
Caskets100% of sales price (minimum 110% of wholesale)
Funeral services100% of funds in escrow or trust

Cancellation and Refunds

If you cancel a pre-need contract, 100% of trust funds must be returned, minus taxes owed and a 3% administrative charge. Selling funeral services on a pre-need basis without a license is a misdemeanor in Georgia.

Veteran Burial Benefits

Veterans and their families have access to additional burial benefits at no cost.

National Cemeteries in Georgia

  • Georgia National Cemetery (Canton, Cherokee County)
  • Marietta National Cemetery (Downtown Marietta, Cobb County)

State Veterans Cemeteries

  • Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery -- Milledgeville
  • Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery -- Glennville

Both state cemeteries are maintained to VA national cemetery "shrine-level" standards.

Benefits at National and State Cemeteries (No Charge)

  • Gravesite
  • Vault or liner
  • Grave marker/headstone
  • Opening and closing of the grave
  • Setting the marker
  • Use of the committal chapel (at state cemeteries)

Additional Benefits (Any Burial Location)

  • Burial flag
  • Presidential Memorial Certificate
  • Government headstone or marker (even at a private cemetery)

Contact the Georgia Department of Veterans Service at veterans.georgia.gov for eligibility requirements.

How to Reduce Costs

  • Get multiple General Price Lists. Compare at least three funeral homes. Prices can vary significantly, even within the same city.
  • Consider direct cremation. At $1,000 to $3,000, it is the most affordable option. A memorial service can be held separately at no additional cost if hosted at a home, park, or place of worship.
  • Use the FTC Funeral Rule. Choose only the services you want. Decline embalming if you are choosing cremation or immediate burial.
  • Check veteran eligibility. Free burial in a national or state cemetery saves thousands.
  • Ask about the Year's Support. If the deceased was a Georgia resident and had a surviving spouse or minor children, Year's Support (O.C.G.A. Chapter 53-3) can set aside estate assets for funeral expenses and family maintenance, taking priority over most creditors.
